Lancashire Police Museum: A Local Gem

The Lancashire Police Museum in Lancaster has recently been honoured at the prestigious Lancashire Tourism Awards, receiving a Judges’ Commendation in the Small Visitor Attraction category. This accolade highlights the museum’s significant contribution to both the local economy and the quality of life in Lancashire. Organised by Marketing Lancashire, the awards celebrate excellence across 27 categories, recognising everything from large attractions to accessible tourism.

Sabine Skae, the museum’s co-ordinator, expressed her delight at the commendation, acknowledging the fierce yet friendly competition. Since its opening in June 2022, the museum has welcomed over 60,000 visitors and provided educational experiences to countless students. Sabine also extended congratulations to the category winner, the Spitfire Visitor Centre, which the team plans to visit soon.

Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, praised the museum for its role in fostering community engagement. He encouraged locals and visitors alike to explore the museum, which vividly brings the history of policing to life.

Housed within a former prison wing at Lancaster Castle, the museum offers 16 captivating exhibits. Visitors can delve into the history of Lancashire police, explore police training, forensic development, and recruitment. Interactive displays on crime and custody, along with the chance to don a police uniform, make for an engaging experience.

Open on Thursdays and Fridays, with additional days during school holidays, the museum is free to enter and staffed by dedicated volunteers. For those interested in a unique and educational outing, the Lancashire Police Museum is a must-visit destination.
