At Lancastrian Estates, we’re thrilled to share exciting news about a spectacular addition to Morecambe’s upcoming Baylight ’25 festival. The legendary Moby Dick ship, a beloved piece of our local maritime history, is set to make a dramatic return as an illuminated galleon installation, promising to create a magical spectacle across our beautiful bay.
The original vessel’s fascinating history reads like a maritime adventure novel. Built in 1887 at Glasson Dock as the Ryelands, this remarkable ship enjoyed multiple lives before becoming Morecambe’s famous Moby Dick. From its early days carrying cargo along the west coast to starring in Hollywood productions, including the 1950 classic ‘Treasure Island’ and later as the Pequod in ‘Moby Dick’, this vessel’s story captures the imagination.
The ship’s connection to Morecambe deepened when it became a popular tourist attraction alongside the Super Swimming Stadium in the early 1960s. Though its physical presence ended tragically in the fire of 1970, its legacy has remained an important part of our town’s heritage.
This new illuminated installation, supported by Morecambe Town Council, represents more than just a festival attraction. For us at Lancastrian Estates, it symbolises the ongoing renaissance of Morecambe as a destination that honours its past while embracing an exciting future. Such cultural initiatives continue to enhance our area’s appeal, contributing to the growing interest we’re seeing in Morecambe’s property market.
The installation will be viewable during Baylight ’25 on February 21st and 22nd, creating what promises to be a spectacular addition to Morecambe’s winter calendar. We encourage both residents and visitors to experience this magical tribute to our maritime heritage, which will undoubtedly create a stunning backdrop against our famous bay views.
This celebration of Morecambe’s history demonstrates why our town continues to capture hearts and imaginations, making it an increasingly desirable place to both visit and call home.
